Origins

Picture
The Fried Pirates as a trio came together to play a piece written by Adrian and Gareth Calway about the legend of the Binham Fiddler, to be performed at the inauguration of the archaeological site at Fiddler's Hill in July 2012 (see here).  Since then we have evolved into a 4 piece lineup of Adrian, John, Sharon and Roger with guests dropping in occasionally. We vary our very extensive set list of upbeat traditional songs and tunes, modern songs, original material and Americana to suit the venue and the audience.   Featuring mandolins, bouzouki, banjo, harmonica, percussion, guitar and 4 part vocal harmonies they can be seen at festivals, busking and concert gigs around East Anglia and beyond.

Adrian has been playing for a long time!  He  visited his first folk club when he was 14, and,  after a misspent few decades playing guitar in blues bands and the like, returned to the acoustic fold in 2001. He now sings and plays mostly things that are not guitars with the Pirates.  Alongside the Pirates Adrian runs the monthly acoustic sessions at The Red Cat in North Wootton.

Roger learned guitar at University, mainly to try and pick up girls.  He has sung and played with a number of local bands and appears regularly as a solo performer at acoustic sessions.  He is a big fan of  Jake Thackray and, if he could be anyone, it would probably be Steve Knightly.  Main ambition is to remember all the words he has to sing.

After a lot of singing in the shower and with a hairbrush Sharon took the plunge with singing lessons and took to the stage with the Pirates at Fakenham Beer and Folk festival back in 2015 and has not managed  to escape!

John made his first public appearance with the proto - Pirates, joining Roger and Adrian for a few numbers back in 2011 on West Norfolk Radio.  Outstanding banjo player, plus lots of other things we are trying to get him to play on stage with us.  John can be seen guesting with lots of bands in Norfolk when not with the Pirates.
